University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Extends Ombuds Service to Students

The University Ombuds Office at UNC announced that it will now serve the student body of nearly 30,000. University Ombuds Wayne Blair and Laurie Mesibov said they are ready to discuss student concerns about interpersonal conflicts, student life, policy procedures and interpretations, academic issues, offensive behavior, ethical issues, and help in accessing other University resources and formal processes.

While taking on this new population, Blair and Mesibov will continue as a resource for 12,000 university employees and faculty. (UNC News.)

At a presentation to staff last week, Blair identified several trends that his office has noticed. Many issues centered around using technology to solve interpersonal problems. “Alright, we love technology. Technology is really efficient, but you cannot manage conflict via email, or text messages or Twitter,” he said. Other trends he noted were the toll of budget cuts, bullying by subordinates, and salary equity. (Daily Tar Heel.)
