CERN Ombuds: Leadership Depends on Empowered Employees

In a recent newsletter article, Vincent Vuillemi, the Ombuds at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, discusses self-empowerment and leadership. Vuillemi observes most of his cases arise from an evaluative relationship, but believes that the problems are not solely due to a lack of leadership of a direct or indirect supervisor.

Instead, he argues that feedback from employees is necessary for ethical and effective leadership.
It is not the best strategy to expect that only the manager put these ideas on the table, considering this as solely the manager’s job. It it is much better to help and participate in team leadership.
He grounds the explanation with examples from his own organization.  (CERN Bulletin.)
