Transitions
- Retirements -- Several notable Ombuds retired in 2016, including: Roger Callanan (North Carolina State); Pam Caruso (NASA); Milton Clark (Cal State San Bernardino); Betsy Decyck (Cal State Long Beach); Tina Feiger (Santa Monica College); Howard Gadlin (National Institutes of Health); and Cottrell Webster (FDIC).
- Passings -- Ombuds who passed away were: Robert Herschler (UC Riverside); Howard Schachman (National Institutes of Health); and Robert Wellman (UMass Amherst).
Popular Articles
- Generally, job postings draw the most views. Last year, the Blog posted 112 jobs (a huge increase from the 58 posted in the 2015), and the position at the National Institutes of Health was viewed over 700 times. For the first time in many years, a non-job post, "IOA Posts Agenda, Opens Registration for 2016 Annual Conference,", on January 27 drew nearly 1,100 hits.

- New Programs -- In 2016, 32 organizations created or expanded Ombuds programs, including: Academy of Management; American Public University; Andrews University; Barnard College; Brandeis University; California State University, Chico; California State University East Bay; Catalan Biomedical Research Institute (IBIDELL); Colorado State University (faculty); Dalhousie University; Furman University; Indiana University School of Medicine; Kyrene School District; Oregon Health & Science University; Pasadena Unified School District; Politecnico di Milano (Italy); Quest University; South Dakota State University; State University of New York Potsdam; Southern Oregon University; Texas A&M Commerce; Texas A&M Corpus Christi; University of Alabama at Birmingham; University of Maryland School of Dentistry; University of Minho (Portugal); University of South Florida System; University of West Florida; University of Windsor; U.S. Department of Agriculture; U.S. National Park Service; Weatherford International; and West Virginia University. This compares to 21 Ombuds offices that opened in 2015.
- Closed Programs -- Although the end of Ombuds programs are rarely publicized, I am aware of a few: American Public University; Apollo Education Group (University of Phoenix); and Hamline University.
- Pending Programs -- Based on job postings and official announcements in 2016, new Ombuds are expected at: Colorado Permanente Medical Group; Columbia College Chicago; Eastern Kentucky University; Howard University (faculty); Intelligence Community Civilian Joint Duty Program; Meharry Medical College; North Carolina State University (staff); University of Florida College of Medicine; University of Hawai'i; University of Missouri–Kansas City (staff); University of North Carolina School of the Arts; and U.S. Executive Office for Immigration Review.
